7 Things You Should be Grateful About in Your Life

7 Things You Should be Grateful About in Your Life

Let me start with the story of my client Oliver who was going through a personal crisis a few weeks ago. He was a married man with a son. He belonged to a huge family and loved to entertain his kins. Every year, he would invite his relatives from near and far to his home. He liked to flaunt his wealth in front of them. However, he would completely forget to consult his wife regarding this. It would become very burdensome for her to shoulder the responsibility of so many guests at a time. Eventually, she became sad because she felt that her husband didn’t care for her. Her health began to deteriorate and her son felt neglected too.

None of the relatives would bring gifts or food for them because city life was expensive. One day, his wife disappeared with the child from the house. He couldn’t find her. He was so engaged in making others happy that he forgot to make his wife and son happy. In spite of this situation, he invited his relatives again. But, this time, no one turned up because everyone knew what had happened. His wife had landed a job, moved on and begun a new life. When he sought my help, he was a distraught man. Over a few coaching sessions, he realized that he was a self-centred person. Too late, but Oliver understood what is important in life and how he should be grateful for the same.

As human beings, we often forget to show gratitude to our life, people or things that really matter. We start chasing materialistic pleasures that have little or no value in our life. In the process, we end up hurting ourselves and our loved ones. Here are seven things you should always be grateful for:

Family

Your family is your backbone. They will be always there for you, no matter what. There are some unfortunate people who are orphaned and abandoned at the time of their birth. They grow up without the love of family. So, appreciate all the love and care you get from the family.

Health

As they say, health is wealth. If you are fit and fine, be thankful that you can see, walk, think and listen. Even if you have some disease or illness, be grateful that all your other body parts are healthy.

Food and Shelter

There are millions of people in the world who sleep hungry and live without a roof on their head. If you have food to eat and a place to call home, feel blessed.

Kindness of Other People

There are times in life when a friend or stranger comes to your rescue. Without them, it would have been impossible for you to come out of a situation. You should always be indebted to them.

Difficult Times

Life is all about ups and downs. If there are happy times, then there will be difficult phases too. However, remember that tough circumstances make you stronger. Challenging times are also stepping stones to a successful life.

Opportunities

Ever wondered why some people are happier or more successful than others? It is because they were lucky to get opportunities to do things they want or love. So, when you get any such opportunity, thank your good fortune.

You are Alive

There is no other greater gift than life itself. Express your gratitude that you are alive to spend time with your loved ones and experience things in life.

Tips to be Grateful

  • Keep a gratitude journal. List positive things that happen to you every day.
  • Feed positive thoughts to your mind.
  • Learn to control your mind through breathing.
  • Do not take your mind and body for granted. Eat healthy and exercise regularly.
  • Appreciate the good things in your life at present.
  • Always look for the positives than the negatives in a person, thing or situation.
  • Let the past be. Learn lessons from it and move on.
  • Lend a helping hand. Make a difference. Spread a smile.
