How to overcome depression
Depression has become a commonly known household term these days. Despite this, there is a lot of stigmas attached to it, because it is generally believed that it is just a phase that will pass. Unfortunately, it doesn’t.
Depression drains our energy, our passion, and sometimes even our will to live. Even simple activities like getting up in the morning, brushing and showering can seem like a chore when you suffer from it. And unlike what others say, you can’t just ‘snap out of it’. Healing is a long process, and it takes determination, self-care, and a lot of understanding – both of depression itself and of your own self. While the healing process is something you have to undergo on your own, it does help if the surrounding people are supportive.
Here I would like to tell you that age does not matter when it comes to depression. It can be a child to a grandfather. I also believe that medical therapy is good but after that, it is also good to have a life coach.
Feeling depressed, or suffering from depression?
It is important to understand the difference between feeling depressed and suffering from depression – primarily because depression is a major mental illness. Having a bad day – whether it is triggered by an argument, getting fired, or simply the lack of good coffee – can make you feel depressed. But it is not depression. Depression is when you have a prolonged feeling of sadness that may not necessarily be the result of a difficult event.
Someone I knew well suffered from chronic depression, and it affected their everyday life and lifestyle. During his worst phases, he would feel lethargic and lose his will to do anything. He would also binge eat, avoid exercise and gain a lot of weight because of this, worsening his mood and lowering his energy levels. In a way, he was caught in this cycle of depression that therapy would help.
How can one overcome depression?
Sometimes, you can’t do it on your own. You can go for therapy, and later you can get the help of a life coach. There are no quick fixes. Healing is a long-term process and requires a lot of patience and understanding. If you are feeling depressed, you need to ask for help and reach out to people you trust. And remember – it is okay to get help.
Besides medical therapy, one also needs the right kind of motivation. For that, you need to take the guidance of a life coach.
What can a life coach do for you to prevent depression from disrupting your daily routine?
I know it is easier said than done, since a key characteristic of depression is inactivity?
We find that we are doing less and feel even worse because of that. As I said, it is a vicious circle.
A life coach can keep you motivated in your everyday life. Here are a few tips-
· Become more active.
Even though it feels difficult, it is important to act against depression by becoming more active. Maintain a schedule and stick to it no matter what. Go for a walk, do join mindfulness meditation, and yoga classes.
· Support your health.
An important way to do this is to ensure that you get at least 7 to 8 hours of proper sleep. Practice relaxation techniques such as yoga, deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation or meditation. They can help relieve symptoms of depression, reduce stress, and boost feelings of joy and well-being.
·Eat healthily
What you eat not only has a direct impact on your body but also your mind. You might be tempted to binge-eat but that could cause your mental state to worsen further. The idea is to not skip meals and minimize sugar and refined carbs. Get enough vitamin D.
. Spiritually using words and Speaking
You are what to say to yourself every day and it will be good if you start to use new words in describing yourself (You’re personally made Affirmation) that describes you for who you really are and if not sure ask your family and friends to help you. You can also think about the good memories that you have.
Loud I say and see
Read your affirmations out loud and make sure you place them everywhere in your apartment or house. It should feel as if you have placed all the glitter of positivity around you and it glows whenever you look at it.
