Love is known to be the most beautiful feeling. But actually, love is a complicated set of emotions, beliefs, and behaviors associated with strong feelings of protectiveness, affection, respect and warmth for other people, animals, and so on.

You can feel love for different people for example-children, parents, partners, friends, and pets. So love is a feeling which comes from inside. Sometimes you can’t control this feeling because it just happens. But do not confuse yourself between love and obsession. They are different states of mind.

Some common definitions of love include:

  • A fleeting emotion of affection, care and like.
  • Sudden and dramatic feeling of respect and attraction.
  • Extreme feelings of affection, attachment, and need.
  • A willingness to keep or prioritize someone else’s happiness or well being before your own.
  • Combination of all the above-mentioned feelings.

Different types of love

Unconditional love: unconditional love is unselfish love. When you love someone unconditionally there are no conditions. You care for the happiness of the person you love, you do whatever you can do to make that person happy without expecting anything from that person. Unconditional love is pure love, unselfish love without any conditions.

Romantic love: romantic love is a complicated type of love and it is a strong feeling. It can lead to lifelong happiness or heartbreak. Romantic love is like when you obsessively think about a person and when you feel like you crave for a particular person. It may last from 6 months to a few years before turning into mature relationships. When this type of love begins it has an extreme effect on the behavior of a person in love.

Affectionate love: affectionate love is compassionate love. Affectionate love occurs when you desire to have the person you love near to you and you have a deep caring and affection for that particular person. Affectionate love means having a warm feeling of love for someone.

Self-love: self-love is having great regard for your own happiness and well being. When you start loving yourself you start prioritizing yourself, you take care of your own needs, you do the things that make you happy, and you do not sacrifice your happiness to please others. Self-love makes you able to get and do what you actually deserve for yourself. This is not being selfish but being compassionate towards oneself.

Enduring love: this kind of love emanates within you. Enduring love represents a deeper relationship with you or with another person. It is stimulated by true compassion, empathy, and recognition toward others. Enduring love is generated and inspired by selfless actions.

Playful love: this form of love is a kind affection between young lovers. It is the feeling you have during the initial stages of falling in love with someone. Some examples of playful love include flirting, teasing, fluttering heart and feeling of euphoria. Playfulness in love is important but often missing in long term relationships.

Obsessive love: obsessive love is like possessiveness of madness for another person. When it happens you value yourself more than the person you love. Obsessive love is demanding where you want the other person to do what you want. This is coming from the ego and is never successful.
